Project A.R.E.S. was developed with a very specific idea in mind - to replace human soldiers with that of robots. We wanted a robot with a weapons system that could be controlled wirelessly. Our main goal was to provide a means of communication between the user and the robot’s chassis through the Internet using 802.11. The ability to control a robot over a wireless network allows its range to be much more robust than that of RF and other signals. Our second objective was to design a weapons system that could be coordinated with the chassis. The third goal was to provide a form of feedback so that the user could navigate the robot without actually being present — controlling the robot through foreign terrain would be made easier.

The main purpose of this project is to substitute a human soldier with A.R.E.S. We believe that we can save many lives with the use of this robot. Tactical military missions could first send in a group of A.R.E.S. to scope out an area before sending in actual troops. This would give important information and could possibly change the face of warfare all together — removing the human element.

With the current model of ARES that we have designed, all our intended goals have been successfully accomplished. The robot can be moved wirelessly through the Internet up to a distance of 328ft indoors, and to almost 1000ft within line of sight. The weapons system includes a turret with a semi automatic motorized gun, the free range of motion allows almost any target to be attainable. An attached wireless camera to the turret allows the user to see around the robot at all times.
